The speciation of particulate phosphorus (TPP) into inorganic (PIP) and organic phosphorus (POP), has been scarcely investigated in suspended particulate matter (SPM), contrary to numerous sediment studies. This work evaluates the actual capacity of methods for TPP, POP and PIP determination in SPM to measure efficiently and specifically each pool. Methods were tested on a range of plankton-associated organic and inorganic P compounds, on microalgal cultures and estuarine samples. Then results are specifically discussed reviewing P speciation in phytoplankton. For TPP analysis, the method of Solorzano and Sharp (1980) is recommended compared with that of Aspila et al. (1976), originally dedicated to sediment, as there is one step less, the protocol is more... |

Environmental and species features which lead to increases in cell density of the D.S.P. Dinoflagellate Dinophysis in inshore and offshore waters of the île de Ré - île d'Oléron area, France (cruises "Dinopertuis89"). Four weekly sampling series have been carried out, within 10 May – 31 May 1989, at 24 stations located from inshore to offshore waters of the "île de Ré" - "île d’Oléron" area, with the aim to investigate (i) whether Dinophysis increases in cell density occur first in offshore waters and then, eventually, are pushed to the coast, or develop simultaneously in the whole area, and (ii) whether there are some environmental conditions which are related to Dinophysis blooms. Depths of sampling have been stated on the bas is of STD profiles. All... |

In the 2000 and 2001 springtime periods, mesozooplankton samples were systematically taken during research cruises devoted to the study of the distribution and abundance of small pelagic fishes in the French part of the Bay of Biscay, NE Atlantic, continental shelf. Simultaneous activities of three enzymes were measured in these mesozooplankton samples, to characterize the main features of ecosystem function at a regional scale. The aim was to assess assimilation rates of carbohydrates, through pyruvate kinase activity, and protein, through trypsin activity, by the mesozooplankton community and the resulting overall productivity, through aspartate transcarbamylase activity. The highest influence on the pelagic environment was the strong difference in the... |

Phosphorus (P) limitation of phytoplankton growth is known to affect the accumulation and release of carbohydrates (CHO) by micro-algae. However, relatively little is known about the fate of algal exudates, notably their bacterial degradation. The CHO chemical characterization is also not exhaustive, especially in ‘functional’ pools relevant for phytoplankton physiology (particulate reserve [R] or structural [S] CHO) and for bacterial degradation (dissolved mono- [MDCHO] and polysaccharides [P-DCHO]). In this study, we investigated how P depletion and repletion affect the CHO composition in diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii cultures, and the shortterm response of free and diatom-attached bacteria in terms of abundance and potential βglucosidase activity... |

From 22 April to 19 June 1990, 7 stations located off La Rochelle, France, from near-shore ('bassin Marennes-Oleron') to offshore waters (50 m depth contour) were visited 8 times, with the aim of determining whether the toxic dinoflagellates Dinophysis spp. increase in cell density in nutrient-poor offshore water, in nutrient-rich inshore waters, or both, and to determine their vertical distribution in relation to stratification. Temperature stratification developed offshore, but not inshore. In April, few Dinophysis spp. were present offshore and none inshore. In late May, up to 15 X 10(3) cells l(-1) were recorded in the 10 to 15 m layer offshore, whereas inshore waters contained only a few cells l(-1). In late May, a short period of wind partly modified... |

In order to estimate in situ bacterial exoproteolysis and its contribution to bacterial secondary production (BSP), we studied microbial activities (BSP and kinetics of exoproteolytic activity) in relation to dissolved combined amino acids (DCAA) during the survey of an Atlantic marine pond. In this pond, high concentrations of DCAA (mean = 4.27 mu M), probably generated by zooplankton grazing, allowed large bacterial biomass development and high production (max = 10(11) cells l(-1) and 18.8 x 10(9) cells l(-1) d(-1) respectively). Exoproteolytic enzyme activity (mean V-m = 55.9 mu M d(-1)) was tightly cou pled to bacterial production, suggesting that protein utilization was essential for bacterial growth. Calculation, according to the Michaelis-Menten... |

The occurrence of alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) that hydrolyses organic phosphorus into phosphate (PO4) is commonly related to PO4 deficiency of oceanic, coastal and fresh waters. APA is almost never investigated in PO4-rich estuaries, since very low activities are expected to occur. As a consequence, microbial mineralization of organic phosphorus into PO4 has often been ignored in estuaries. In this study, we examined the importance of potential APA and the associated microbial dynamics in two estuaries, the Aulne and the Elorn (Northwestern France), presenting two different levels of PO4 concentrations. Unexpected high potential APA was observed in both estuaries. Values ranged from 50 to 506 nmol L−1 h−1, which range is usually found in very... |

The spatial pattern in hydro-plankton and fish distributions and their relationship were analysed based on the spring 2000 fisheries acoustic survey. The importance of this survey was that it was a multi-disciplinary platform which collected an extensive set of parameters in the hydro-plankton leading to a potentially finer description of hydro-plankton conditions and fish habitats. More than 50 variables were measured on a grid of stations, in four compartments of the ecosystem: hydrology, nutrients, primary producers and meso-zooplankton. First, a joint analysis of all hydro-plankton compartments was performed using multiple factor analysis (MFA). The method was used to estimate a compromise factorial space common to all compartments in which the... |

The abundance and composition of microbial communities were investigated during 2007 in Marennes Oleron Bay (France) in order to characterize the biological relationships governing the planktonic food web. Compared to the results of previous years, there was a lower abundance and a lower magnitude of variations in autotrophic and heterotrophic microbial entities in 2007. Using a Spearman rank correlation analysis, a significant link for biological abundance was only noted between bacteria and ciliates. However, an interesting relationship was highlighted between chlorophyll a and bacterial aminopeptidase and beta-glucosidase exoenzymatic activities. Two characteristic periods of virus-bacteria uncoupling were observed in spring and autumn 2007. Using... |

Thermostratification and seasonal Light increase are generally considered the first causes of phytoplankton spring blooms in temperate waters. The objective of this study is to confirm the existence of winter phytoplankton blooms, responsible for the early exhaustion of phosphate, within the Gironde plume waters (southeast Bay of Biscay), and to understand what may initiate them so early. Two cruises, BIOMET 2 and BIOMET 3, were carried out respectively in early (8 to 21 January) and late winter 1998 (25 February to 11 March). An increase of phytoplankton biomass (chl a) between the 2 cruises and non-conservative nutrients observed in late winter confirm an early phytoplankton growth both in the Gironde plume and adjacent oceanic waters. Among factors that... |

Carbohydrates have been analysed in arder to establish the state of organic matter in sediment. Samples were collected bath in neritic and oceanic (Orgon croises) areas. Reported data demonstrate that the insoluble-carbohydratesfsoluble-carbohydrates ratio (1/S) is a good indicator of organic matter evolution. In sediments, 1/S values ranging from 6 to 8 are associated with slightly-degraded organic matter, whereas values higher than 10 and eyen up to 30 relate to highly-degraded material. Furthermore, 1/S and CjN ratios generally show the same profile in sediments. The balance betweeh soluble (S) and insoluble (1) carbohydrates depends on the early stages of organic matter evolution, the soluble fraction being more easily degraded; such factors as... |
